Surrogacy in India - Centre plan: Surrogacy for all; Women’s wing wants the term ‘couple’ redefined

New Delhi: The Union women and child development ministry has proposed that the health ministry allow surrogacy to everyone, including unmarried couples and those in live-in relationships.

In its comments on the proposed Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill, 2013, the ministry has opined that the health ministry’s definition of ‘couple’ is narrow. The WCD wants the definition of “couple to include everyone who wants to avail ARTs and surrogacy, irrespective of marriage”.

Contrary to the health ministry’s draft Bill — that says that no woman shall act as surrogate for more than three successful births including their own children — the women and child development ministry has proposed to extend the same provision to four births (live and still births), including her own children with not less than a two-year interval between two deliveries.

The WCD is also of the view that women above 21 years of age with conditions like height below 140 cm, women with low Body Mass Index (BMI) and with high-risk conditions like cardio-vascular diseases, thyroid problems should be excluded.

Adoption vs. Surrogacy Financial Costs

Jimmy Fallon is bursting at the seams over his baby girl, Winnie, who was born via a surrogate to him and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, in late July. And let's not forget about Giuliana and Bill Rancic's nearly 1-year-old, Duke, also born via a surrogate. From surrogates to adoption, there's a baby boom happening in Hollywood. Unfortunately, these routes aren't as easy for those who don't have that star paycheck to pay for it

Nancy Juvonen and Jimmy Fallon attend TIME 100 Gala, TIME'S 100 Most Influential People In The World at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 23, 2013 in New York City.

While it seems like it might be an easy alternative, the reality, of course, is more complicated and expensive. Hopeful couples discover that adoption or gestational surrogacy costs from tens of thousands of dollars to more than $100,000. (And that's on top of the thousands of dollars many have already shelled out on fertility treatments, to say nothing about the emotional toll.)

Story of a Surrogate: the journey to parenthood - ABC South East SA - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Reaching out
Last year, two hundred and sixty-nine babies were born to surrogate parents in Australia. This year, two hundred and fifty-four babies have been born through the process of surrogacy already.
It's a growing trend in Australia but is one that remains relatively uncommon.
Although commercial surrogacy is illegal in Australia, prospective parents have found their mothers-to-be online and via friends and family.
Others also seek help through the form of agencies such as Surrogacy Australia, which says it helps to support those planning on undertaking the process, sometimes finding prospective surrogate mothers abroad, in countries such as India and Thailand.

Surrogacy India - At Weecare surrogacy our Indian doctors are Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

HYDERABAD: The burgeoning fertility industry of Hyderabad currently going through rapid growth is also trying to deal with its fair share of malpractice with many fertility clinics out to make a quick buck by duping vulnerable couples who are eager to become parents.
Several clinics in the city continue to perform various IVF and surrogacy procedures despite lacking the necessary infrastructure facilities and medical expertise, top officials said.
And efforts to regulate the industry are not proving to be very successful, officials said as clinics are unwilling to come under the scanner with only six out of 60 clinics registering itself with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) since January.

Surrogacy India is an option - Costs for battling infertility are high

When her friends complain about how expensive their kids are, Haley Hanzon laughs.
"We just show them the bills showing them how much trying to have these babies cost," she says.
Like one out of every six to eight couples in the U.S., the Hanzons are infertile. The young couple lives in West Jordan, a suburb of Salt Lake City, and has been trying to start a family without success for several years. Haley leads a local infertility support group of about 20 women, and they often commiserate on the staggering costs of family-building.
While debate nationwide centers around contraceptive access, the costs of conception are so high and insurance coverage so limited that fertility treatment is largely viewed as a luxury good. However, infertility affects rich and the poor alike, and couples like the Hanzons who pursue fertility treatment face an uphill financial battle in building their families.

Surrogacy In India - Varying laws can complicate surrogacy

If Jennifer Benito-Kowalski could have had her way, she wouldn't have shipped her eggs to India.
Determined to have a child but unable to conceive and unwilling to adopt, the San Carlos woman considered hiring a Bay Area surrogate in early 2012.
But the cost was high - more than $100,000 - and surrogacy in the United States sounded like a nightmare. She feared a repeat of a case in New Jersey, where a surrogate took back the baby she had carried from its intended parents.
"I didn't want to take any chances" of that happening, said Benito-Kowalski, 40. So she and her husband, Steve Kowalski, mailed their embryos to a clinic in India, where surrogacy was just $25,000 and seemed, at least at the time, more clear cut.

Review - Weecare Surrogacy USA

Dr Meenashki with baby Connor

A few weeks ago we returned home with two beautiful babies born through
surrogacy in Mumbai.  We have used WeeCare Surrogacy as our agent and are
completely satisfied with the services that they have provided to us.
Taking the surrogacy journey is a difficult decision as it is fraught with
risks and uncertainty. WeeCare reduces most of these risks. We could trust
in them right away because, Victor Hui-Wee, the executive director has
taken the  surrogacy journey himself. Victor was straightforward with us
and most helpful throughout our journey. Once we signed up with WeeCare,
we were given quick access to the partner in India and also flexibility to
choose when we want to start our journey.

Victor provided with thorough support throughout the process, including
detailed information about what to expect, conference calls before we
embark on our initial trip and the final trip to pick-up the babies.
Victor always responds quickly to e-mail and telephone queries and phone
us several times when we are in Mumbai to provide support.

When we look at our babies now, we marvel that we are able to have such a
beautiful family. We know that we could not have completed the surrogacy
journey without the support and encouragement from WeeCare Surrogacy.

Thank you so much!
